Society of St. Vincent de Paul

A Hand, not a Handout.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul was founded in Paris, France, in 1833, by Frederic Ozanam and a group of young Catholics who were inspired by the work done by St. Vincent de Paul in the 16 th century. The OLGC Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been a part of our Parish since 1998 and is part of the Arlington Diocese Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The Society is comprised of OLGC parishioners. Our mission is to help those in need and promote human dignity. We do this by providing assistance on a person-to-person basis. It is this personalized involvement that makes the work of the Society unique. This aid can include financial and material assistance, referrals to government and community organizations and, many times, simply meeting with and listening to those who come to us.

An essential precept of the Society’s work is to provide help while maintaining the confidentiality and dignity of those who we serve.
Our work is made possible by the generosity of our parishioners. OLGC’s Vincentians are supported by weekly offerings, individual contributions, and the annual OLGC Women’s Club Bake Sale. Each year we help over 200 needy families that often have nowhere else to go.

Our primary contact with those in need is via their call to our Help Line, which we monitor daily. In addition, whenever, possible, we visit with those who call for help. This direct interaction is a Vincentian tradition. The Society also works closely with community groups, other area churches, Fairfax County organizations, and state and federal government agencies.

We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of every month at 7:30 p.m., in the Youth Room in the basement of De Sales Hall. If you are interested in our work, including directly engaging with those facing a difficult time, please consider becoming a Vincentian and join us at a meeting, email us , or leave a message on our Help Line at: 703-938-3210.
