Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Auction

Q

What is “The Auction?”

A

“The Auction” is actually a series of fundraising activities that take place over the course of the year, culminating in the Auction Gala in the spring. Donations by parishioners, CCF families, school teachers and staff, class projects such as the used book sale, raffles including the quilt and 50/50, the car raffle and the Auction Gala itself are all part of the auction.

Q

I don’t have children in the school. Why should I support the Auction?

A

The auction benefits the entire parish, not just the school. While many Catholic schools do rely on auctions for fundraising, OLGC is unusual because funds generated by the auction are used throughout the parish and the school. This event also brings us together as a community and allows us to enjoy each other’s company no matter our age or school affiliation.

Q

What do we do with the money we raise?

A

You see the results of your past generosity each time you attend Mass. Furnishings in the Narthex, the air conditioning in the church, the roof on the parish center, the icons in De Sales Hall, the carpet and lighting in the school, the ActivBoards in the classrooms, repaired the Narthex roof and upgrade the playground, age-related repairs and safety improvements to the rectory; and the design and implementation of a new, integrated website for the school and parish, installation of wi-fi on the school campus.

Q

Why is the car raffle handled by the auction office?

A

OLGC used to raffle a car every year as part of auction fundraising. However, All Saints Parish in Manassas has offered us the opportunity to participate in their 5-car raffle and drawing for cash prizes. This allows us to earn significantly more money than purchasing and raffling a car ourselves, so the All Saints-sponsored raffle has replaced the old auction car raffle. In the past, OLGC raffle ticket purchasers have cash prizes through this raffle.

Q

What do I need to do if I want to attend the Auction Gala?

A

Every parishioner will receive a formal invitation to the Auction Gala or you can view it on the Auction website. Just fill out your response card and return it with your payment by mail or drop it off at the Administration Building. Reservations can also be made through our website at www.olgcauction.org. If you have questions about seating arrangements, or would like to come but don’t know who to sit with, contact Merle Senyk, Reservations Chair, at (703) 896-7402 or bulletin@olgcva.org.

Q

How much does it cost to attend the Auction Gala?

A

Reservations received early the discounted price is $125 per person. Responses postmarked after the date will be charged $150 per person.

Q

I can’t attend the Auction Gala, but I’d like to help. How can I do that?

A

Planning to attend and have fun is an important way to help, but there are other ways to support the Auction Gala. One vital way to help is to volunteer your time as part of the Auction Planning Committee. Work on decorations; help us sell raffle tickets or help set up the day of the auction. Join us for one of our mailing parties which are a fun way to meet and spend time with fellow parishioners too. Don’t worry if you don’t have a lot of time. Sometimes as little as an hour can make a big difference.

Q

I can’t attend and I don’t have time to volunteer, but I’d still like to help. What can I do?

A

You can still support the auction in other ways. Donate an item or service, or go to your favorite merchant and ask them to donate something or advertise in our program. Sponsor a portion of the event with a cash donation to help underwrite expenses, such as the cost of dinner tickets for teachers and clergy; or purchase an advertisement in the program. These are all vital ways to help support OLGC and the Auction Gala.

Q

What kinds of items do you need for the auction? I have something I’d like to donate.

A

Check our website, www.olgcauction.org, for guidelines and a list of suggestions. We also have a wish list at Amazon.com. You may select an item from that list and have it shipped directly to us. You don’t have to leave home to shop, but receive all the credit and allowable tax benefits as the donor. You can find the wish list by following the link on the auction website.

Q

When is your deadline for accepting donations?

A

Our deadline for accepting donations is usually 2 months before the Gala. Items received after the donation deadline may not be included in the printed program that is distributed to registered guests before the auction. It may be included in our on-line catalog as well as a printed addendum that is distributed the night of the auction. In some cases, items received after the donation deadline may be saved for next year’s auction.
