Mr. Derek Rogers
Degrees: Began his college career at Christendom College in VA to study theology and finished a BA in Psychology from SUNY Fredonia.
Professional Background: Pursued a Catholic education and classes in Theology at Christendom College in Front royal, VA for two years before transferring to Fredonia State University to get a degree in Psychology with a concentration on childhood psychology, counseling, and special needs students. At this time I also minored in music. Afterwards, worked at Caves Food and Deli manager (dubbed the Pizza Lord) then as a pre-K teacher at lake Shore Family Center in NY and as a counselor's assistant in Gowanda Elementary, NY. I had the opportunity to volunteer with my wife as Youth Ministers at St. Rose of Lima parish in Forestville NY before being offered a position as Coordinator of Youth Ministry at St. Andrew the Apostle parish in Clifton, VA. Shortly after I earned my certificate in Youth Ministry from the Diocese of Arlington and was hired as Assistant Youth Director before becoming the Director of Youth Ministry at OLGC.
How I put my Faith in Action: My life right now is to serve the church and it's young people. In order to be authentic, I need to practice my faith in everything I do in order to be more virtuous. In doing so, all things can reflect God in some way because I have been making a habit of it. I offer my music, leisure/hobbies, time with my children, anything I enjoy, as an offering and thanksgiving to God. This helps me to be a better member of our church and staff because it is already embedded into everything I am and do.
Favorite Activity Outside of Work: I love playing music, watching movies, board and video games, and sports. If I had to choose one it would be trying to hunt for squirrels with my 4 children.
Favorite Food: Buffalo Wings (the hottest you can get) and an adult beverage. A soda will work too.
Favorite Moment you had in your Vocation: In my vocation of marriage, it was probably the birth of my son after two beautiful girls. In my vocation of youth ministry, there are so many! i love it when I see a teen praying at the blessed sacrament during all night adoration. Or when OLGC is being involved in EVERYTHING at our High School Workcamp with other churches getting inspired by our teens. Another great moment is when I heard the OLGC congregation sing the theme song I wrote for Jr. High Workcamp.
Fun Fact About You: Home Schooled and lived on a farm!
